Rihanna: “I keep very, very good people around me.”

by Melody on July 14th, 2008

R&B/pop singer Rihanna visited The Early Show Wednesday to sing songs from her latest album, “Good Girl Gone Bad.”

But, don’t let the album’s title fool you. Rihanna is hardly a bad girl and hasn’t been much of a tabloid target save for a rumored romance with equally squeaky clean R&B star Chris Brown (she says they’re just very good friends).

Rihanna credits her stability to her Barbadian upbringing and trusted relationships.

“I keep very, very good people around me,” Rihanna told Early Show National Correspondent Tracy Smith. “I come from a different place, a very strict household. My best friend, she’s always around me. She is my rock and she definitely knocks me out if she thinks I’m getting out of line.”

Rihanna was still in high school when rapper and music mogul Jay-Z heard her demo and signed her to his Def Jam label. She released her first single, “Pon De Replay,” in the summer of 2005 and it went on to become a worldwide hit. Her 2007 smash “Umbrella” earned her a Best Rap/Sung Collaboration Grammy.

She said she went into the business without any expectations, but with a lot of focus.

“I didn’t expect anything, I came into it just knowing what I wanted to do,” she said. “I had a very good work ethic. I still do. Hard work really, really pays off and I’m seeing that now.”
