Behind the Scenes on the Allure Photoshoot

Rihanna arrived at New York City’s Lux Studio for her Allure photo shoot at 9:30 A.M., after a recording session that ran until 4 A.M. Although she took a nap while her makeup was applied, she perked up as Robin Thicke’s CD, The Evolution of Robin Thicke, played. Here she poses for the cover in a Lanvin dress.

Asked about the rumors she dated Josh Hartnett, Rihanna says, “I went to [the club] Pink Elephant, and he came by. All of a sudden, the next day I’m seeing that we were kissing and hugging up each other. You can’t even go out with a friend who’s a celebrity and have a good time without people making shit up…well, at least he’s good-looking, right?” Here makeup artist Mark Carrasquillo blends her eye shadow at the shoot.

Rihanna (with Carrasquillo and his assistant Kristi Matamoros) is the unofficial spokeswoman for Barbados, regularly clearing up American misconceptions about the island. She’s reassured people that yes, Barbadians speak English, have roads, and use indoor toilets. She takes it all in stride: “I can’t get upset.” she says. “They just don’t know.”

While watching Aeon Flux, Rihanna liked Charlize Theron’s sleek, dark hair so much she spontaneously chopped her long, wavy locks into a precise bob and dyed it black—without her label’s permission. “My friends still live in Barbados, and they let me know that everyone asks for the ‘Rihanna haircut.’” At the shoot, hairstylist Yannick d’ls instructs her to shake her hair for a “young and easy” finish.

Although Rihanna (here with Thompson) hangs out with older people—”in their 30s” she says while raising her eyebrows—she also has fun like a teenager, watching horror movies and pranking her friends. “As soon as she’s comfortable she’ll play a trick on you,” says one of her best friends Leandra Goodridge, who accompanied Rihanna (a.k.a. Robyn) on the shoot. “Every single day I’ve got to be on my guard.”

Rihanna recently signed an advertising campaign for Gillete’s Venus Breeze Razor, insuring her legs for $1 million. The fact her legs will be on billboards “weirds her out.” “Genetically my legs are supposed to be huge. I can’t really think about it, or I’ll go crazy,” she says.

Growing up, she was teased—to the point of fist fights—for having paler skin than her peers. “I was cultured in a very ‘black’ way. But when I got to school I’m being called ‘white’…they would look at me, and they would curse me out. I didn’t understand.”

“While in America beautiful is skinny, in Barbados it’s thick—girls with huge butts and nice curves,” the singer says.
